DON COOK - ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
U anyone has been a witness to the
growth and development of Fairfield
University and its athletic department
it is the Fairfield Athletic Director C.
Donald Cook.
Mr. Cook arrived on the Fairfield
campus in 1959 as a freshman from
Mount Vernon, N.Y. While a student
he was an outstanding baseball player
for the Stags. As a junior he was named
to the All-ECAC team as a catcher and
he captained the Stags' nine his senior season. He was named for the Senior Athletic
Award of the Class of '63.
Cook returned to Fairfield in 1966 to take over as head baseball coach. Since
assuming control, the ball program has been upgraded to major college status and
the Stags have been in NCAA tournament contention on several occasions.
His 1976 team set a New England record for most stolen bases with 108, breaking
the record set by the Stags in 1975.
In 1971 he was named as the Athletic Director, succeeding George Bisacca.
Since then Fairfield bas taken many important .strides in its effort to improve
both inter-collegiate and recreational programs.
A major undertaking was the renovation of the gymnasium, increasing the
seating capacity to 3,600 and bring all Stag games back to the campus. For several
seasons Fairfield had been playing many home games at the New Haven Arena.
Fairfield now competes on a varsity level in baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey,
golf, cross country and tennis.
Women's athletics have also become a very important part of the Fairfield program,
with teams competing on a varsity level in basketball, tennis and field hockey.
Cook served on the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Constitution Committee
for the 1973-74 and 1974-75 years and he is currently on the ECAC Public Relations
Committee. He was also an advisor to the ECAC Basketball Tournament Selection
Committee.

BRENDAN SUHR - ASSOCIATE COACH
The past couple of years Fairfield
University has had outstanding success
getting excellent scholar-athletes to
enroll and play basketball. One of the
reasons why is Brendan Suhr.
He has spent the past three £easons
as Fred Barakat's number one assistant
coach with recruiting and scouting
among his responsibilities. The current
crop of freshmen and sophomores playing
for the Stags are the fruits of Suhr's
labors.
The 25-year-old Suhr is a New Jersey native and he played scholastic basketball
at Fair Lawn high school in Fair Lawn, N.J., where he was coached by Hubie Brown,
the current coach of the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA.
He graduated from Fair Lawn in 1969 and entered Montclair (N.J.) State College.
He was a starter there under coach Ollie Gelston.
He was the playmaking guard at Montclair, and his senior season he was the
team's captain. He led his club in assists and free throw percentage and was named
Most Valuable Player.
Suhr earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education in June of 1973,
graduating with honors while serving as president of Phi Epsilon Kappa, an academic
fraternity.
Suhr made the move to major college basketball immediately following graduation,
when he was named as the assistant coach at the University of Detroit under Dick
Vitale.
His only seacon there he helped guide the Titans to a 17-9 record, ironically
including a win over the Stags in the Motor City Classic.
Suhr is the program director of the Fairfield County Basketball Camp and the
Fred Barakat Coaches and Players' Clinic. Often in demand as a speaker on basketball,
Suhr devotes much of his time in the off-season lecturing and giving clinics on
fundamentals.
He is also the director of coach and player development and a member of the
Board of Directors for the Fairfield Junior Pro Basketball Association.
He is currently a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of
the United States, the New England Basketball Coaches Association, the Metropolitan
Basketball Coaches Association and he is a member of the Rules Committee of the
New England coaches group.
Suhr and his wife, the former Mona Lisa Valentino, live in Stratford.
GEORGE THOMPSON
ASSISTANT COACH
George Thompson joined the Fairfield coaching
starr prior to the 1975-76 season and proved to be
a very valuable addition to the Stags' basketball
program.
Thompson is a Bridgeport product and was one
of the finest scholastic players in the met area in
recent years. He played high school ball at Bassick
high school where he was an all-league selection.
He later played at Leicester Junior College in
Massachusetts. He enjoyed a successful two years
there, helping his club to 27-5 and 23-7 records
from 1970 to 1972. George, an aggressive 6-7 front
court player, scored 18 points a game and averaged
15 rebounds during his first season and increased
that production to 27 points and 23 rebounds a
game in his second year. He was an All New
England selection and earned his Associated Degree
in liberal arts in 1972.
Thompson moved to Southern Illinois where he
was a starter and his senior year the team went.
19-7. He scored in double figures there also.
George earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
criminology and pre-law in 1974.
Thompson has been especially helpful to coach
Barakat in working with the Stags' big men, and
with recruiting. He lives in Bridgeport with his
wife, Debra.
JIM MORROS - ASSISTANT COACH
Jim Morros is the newest member of the Fairfield
coaching staff.
Coach Morros brings to the Stags a wealth of
baseball knowledge, with an emphasis on the defensive
end of the game. He is a dedicated, hardworking
individual who is expected to be a very
valuable addition to the staff.
Morros is a native of Bristol, Conn., and
graduated from Hartford Public high school. He
spent four years in the Marine Corps, including 14
months in Vietnam.
He earned his B.A. from Springfield College,
graduating in 1970.
Morros coached one season of football and basketball
at Hartford Public and basketball at Mattatuck
Community College before coming to southern
Connecticut.
For six years Morros coached baseball, basketball
and football at Joel Barlow high school in Redding
prior to arriving at Fairfield.
Morros and his wife Emico have two children,
Kelley and Sean.

OUTLOOK
When you have eight returning lettermen, four returning starters and four prized
recruits you are bound to feel optimistic. The Stags are, but then after looking at
the schedule over the first four weeks of the season reality begins to take over.
The Joe Lapchick Tournament at St. J ohn's, at Seton Hall and at the Holiday
Festival against Georgetown is far from an easy start. Still there is a lot of talent
at Fairfield and the Stags are very hopeful of a successful season.
Here are some of the reasons why.
Let's start in the backcourt. Returning is sophomore Joe DeSantis. His freshman
performance was simply remarkable. ln his first game he scored 23 points to take
scoring honors against Niagara. Two games later, back home in New York against
UMass in Madison Square Garden, he scored 25 points. When the season ended he
was the Stags' number one scorer with a 16.8 per game average, the club's leader in
assists with 120 and one of New England's top foul shooters with a .835 percentage.
Nobody was startled when he was named New England's outstanding freshman
player. Joey D is a very exciting player, he can score and he can get others to
score with his passing.
The other starting job in the backcourt was still up for grabs as the Stags
approached the season opener against Northwestern. Kim Fisher, a junior college
ali·America and freshman Flip Williams are contending for the starting spot with
veterans Lefty Brown and Pete Holland right behind.
Up front you can describe the Stags about the same as last year, only add a
little speed and quickness. That is an element that was missing, an obvious weakness
last year.
Stag supporters are looking to freshman Daryl Strickland to supply the up front
quickness. He is a 6·5, 175·pound leaper, an all·state pick in New Jersey and a
possible starter.
Returning in the front court are captain Steve Balkun (6·8), junior Mark Plekfa
(6·9) and sophomore center l\Iark Young (6·10), all double figure scorers last season.
Add Str ickland, senior Leo Nolan (6·5) and senior Joe Finn (6·10), and freshman
Barry Gunderson <6-6) and it makes for an impressive group with a lot of depth.
The schedule will force the Stags to mature as a team early. The opener against
Northwestern, and St. John's or Brown after that, then Manhattan, Seton Hall,
Georgetown and the rest of the Holiday Festival field all in the month of December
wi II be a stern test.
Success in December could dictate just how well Fairfield does. Last year the
Stags went without a post season bid for the first time in four years. This year
Fairfield is in the ECAC's New England Regional. The competition is very tough
but the goal is to earn a tourney berth and then prove it was deserved.

Great Stag Giants and Joe De San tis
By DON HARRISON
Jim Brown, Wayne Gibbons, George Groom, Bob Jenkins, Bill Jones, R,ay Kelly,
Danny Odums, John Ryan.
These arc the names that generally come to mind whenever somebody broaches
the subject of great guards at Fairfield University. Each, for a variety of reasons,
was a special player, a significent contributor to Fairfield's rapid rise to basketball
prominence.
Joe DeSantis?
It is almost too early to place this youngstet· into this exalted company. One
varsity season of 26 games duration is all that is DeSantis' page in Fairfield history.
And yet there are those who feel he belongs. Already. "Joe has the potential
to be the best guard we've evet· had at Fairfield," coach Fred Barakat ventured
evt>n before Joey D played his first game.
And such a first game. It was Nov. 28, 1975, the opening round of the Hall of
Fame Classic at the Springfield Civic Center. Niagara, destined to win a bid to the
National Invitation Tournament the following March, furnished the opposition.
The curly-haired youngster from The Bronx scored 23 points in his debut - 19
coming in the second half, 11 coming in one dizzy spurt when he personally rallied
the Stags from three points down to four points ahead. That Niagara ultimately
won in overtime, 83-78, wasn't his fault.
The remainder of DeSantis' freshman season was remarkably similar and similarly
remarkable. Clearly New England's Rookie of the Year, he topped the 1975-76 Stags
both in scoring (16.8) and assists (120), a parlay that's difficult to beat.
DeSantis' court skills are so well-rounded that he is, in effect, a combination of
all his predecessors. Probably none consistently did so many things well.
Let's compare Joey D with Fairfield guards of the past:
Shooting: His long-range accuracy is reminiscent of George Groom, merely the
school's all-time scoring leader, and Jimmy Brown, who lofted feathery push shots
against the zone defenses of the mid-Sixties. Firing jump shots on the run, George
was more explosive but less consistent. At the foul line, DeSantis' freshman percentage
of .835 compares favorably to Groom's best, .844 as a junior.
Dribbling: The high dribble, usually a basketball no-no, was the trademark of
Bill Jones, underrated star at the close of the Bisacca Era. Jones' expertise broke
the back of numerous defenses, including the murderous St. Joseph's zone press the
night Fairfield ended the Hawks' home court winning streak at 33 games. DeSantis,
dribbling in a crowd between his legs, behind the back, reminds people of Jones.
Passing: Nobody can deliver the long pass with the accuracy, or the frequency,
of John Ryan, high-spirited floor leader of Fairfield's first two NIT teams, in 1973
and '74. Ryan still holds all New England assists records. DeSantis may make the
short pass as well. An apparent Joey D layup often turns into an electrifying scoring
pass.
Leadership: When injuries forced Odums to the bench late last season, forcing
this Buffalo Brave draftee-to-be to miss five games, DeSantis stepped in to direct
the Stags' offense without missing a beat. His performance in a televised one-point
victory over St. Joe's elicited favorable comment from a statewide audience.
Only time will tell : •hether Joe DeSantis is the absolute best. It's nice to know
we still have three years in which to find out.
