Fairfield University
On a lovely wooded campus of 200 acres, Fairfield University was
founded to carry on a tradition of higher learning. Chartered in 1945
by t he state o.f Connecticut, the University traces its heritage to the
ideals developed when St. Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus
in 1540.
Fairfield University, as one of 28 universities and colleges operated
by the Jesuit Order in the United States, today is coeducational
and has an enrollment oi about 2,800 undergraduates in the College of
Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing and the School of Business.
This University grew from an initial freshmen class of 303 men who
were admitted in 1947. The first commencement was held on June 10,
1951. The first women were admitted in September, 1970.
Back in 19491 the first summer session was held for undergraduates
and in 1950 graauate courses were established leading to a Master of
Arts degree in Education.
The Graduate School of Education was joined in 1966 by an"Other
master's program when the Graduate School of CorPorate and Political
Communication opened. These two schools now enroll almost 1,000 stu·
dents. A third graduate program is scheduled to begin in January, 1981,
offering a Master of Science degree in Financial Management.
Meanwhile, education for adults has also flourished, starting in 1963
with the opening of the Bureau of Business and Public Administration
which offered professional improvement programs for the corporate
.and business sector. The Center for Lifetime Learning followed in 1972
to award bachelor's degrees and in 1975 the Connecticut Center of Continuing
Education opened to benefit adults concerned with satisfying
intellectual curosity, developing a skill or pursuing a new career. These
adult-oriented divisions subsequently merged to form the School of Con·
tinuing Education which recognizes learning as a lifelong process. Today
the School has 1,200 part-time students seeking degrees and about 1,900
non-credit students.
The university comprises 300 full-time and part-time members, the
majority o.f them laymen from many faiths and creeds. About 80 percent
hold doctorate degrees.
The academic, social and ethical development of these students
takes place on a campus that has 22 buildings including eight residence
halls. Among the newer structures are the prize winning Campus Center,
Bannow Science Center, School of Nursing, the Recreational Complex
Nyselius Library with more that 300,000 volumes, and the rejuvenated
Playhouse. Currently under construction is a new $2.1 million faculty
office-classroom building, the first step in a $5.1 million construction·
renovation program. The new building will provide the faculty with
private offices for research and individual conferences with students.
The overall renovation project will lead to more dorm rooms, classrooms,
and the conversion of Bellarmine Hall, the Jesuit residence on campus,
into a central administrative complex for the University.
The Fairfield University campus also houses the Center .for Financial
Studies, an example of cooperation between university and industry.
The center was built on campus to accommodate classes of the National
Association of Mutual Savings Banks and will be an added resource for
Fairfield programs. The classes for the new Master's degree in Financial
Management will also be held in the center.
As a result of its growing reputation for high academic standards,
t he University now has undergraduate students from 29 states, the District
of Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand and Spain.
- ATHLETIC DIRECTOR--
C. Donald Cook
Don Cook, a graduate of Fairfield University, has been the
school's athletic director since 1971.
In addition to directing the university's 10 intercollegiate
sports, as well ·as supervising the recreation complex and intramural
program, Cook is also the school's varsity baseball roach.
The 38-year-old Cook has also taken on a wide variety of
tasks within the Eastern College Athletic Conference and in the
newly created Metro Athletic Conference, a body that will begin·
opera:tion in 1981-82 and conduct championships in five sports.
His list of committee responsibilities is staggering. Most
recently he was named to the ECAC Eligibility Committee, the
NCAA Credentials Committee and the ECAC Committee on
Amateurism.
He is currently beginning his third year as th<e Chairman
of the EC.AIC Baseball Committee, a group which established
guidelines foc the selection of teams to post season tournaments.
Cook is .also chairman of the ECAC baseball selection committee
and t he ECAC representative to the U.S. Baseball Federation.
Cook has been the baseball coach at Fairfield since 1966 as
well. In recent seasons he has developed a program that matches
up with any in the East.
In the last four years, the Stag baseball team has been invited
to post season tournament competition three times. Three
stars of recent Fairfield teams are now playing professional
baseball on the minor league level.
Cook, a baseball standout himself at Fairfield as an undergr-
aduate, holds a BSS in economics. In 1967 he earned his MA
in counseling and guidance from the University and three years
ago he got his MA in human communications at the Fairfield
Graduate School of Corporate and Political Communication.
Cook and wife Donna live in Fairfield with children Ohris
and Courtney.
- HEAD COACH------:
Fred Barakat
Fred Barakat has completed one decade as the head basketball
coach at Fairfield University -.md it has been ten solid years of growth
and success.
Keeping Fairfield, a small Jesuit school of just 2800 students,
among the E>astern elite as far as Division I basketball is concerned
has been no easy task. Yet, Barakat and the Stags have endured, and
quite well at that.
With just five more victories, Barakat will have a career total
of 152 wins and slip past George Bisacca's record total of 151.
Since taking over ten years ago, Barakat has guided the Fairfield
fortunes up the ladder in the East. The growth in stature or the
basketball program, within the strict academic framework of the
University, has been matched by the subsequent growth in Barakat's
personal r eputation.
He is considered, by his peers, to be among the finest motivators,
strategists and r ecruiters in the game. As a speaker, whether at a
basketball clinic, a civic luncheon or booster club affair, Barak:at is
always an exciting and inspiring performer.
Barakat, 41 years old, came to Fairfield in 1970, at a time when
the basketball program was struggling.
The Stags had made a name for themselves as a New England
Division II power, winning the Lambert Cup in 1962, and in 1964 the
team made the move to Division I status.
The transition was a smooth one under coach Bisacca and the
Stags enjoyed four successful seasons of Division I play.
However, after Bisacca's resignation in 1968, the program began
to skid.
In 1970, Fairfield kicked off the decade with Barakat, a rookie
head coach, taking over. He came to Fairfield after three years as
an assistant at Assumption, his Alma Mater, and one year as the
assistant at UConn.
Three short seasons later the Stags were upsetting Marshall before
a packed house at Madison Square Garden in the opening round
of the NIT.
That year, the 1972-73 season, the Stags went 18-9, lost by one
point to Virginia Tech in rthe NIT quarter finals and moved into a
spot alongside the best in the East.
Since then Barakat has kept the Stags in that position.
Fairfield is now a veteran of three NIT's and has qualified for
four ECAC regional playoff spots in the last six years, all under the
direction of coach Barakat.
The Stags have seen some other remarkable seasons with Barakat
at the helm. His 1977-78 team won a school record 22 games while
losing just five. That team was ranked among the East's top ten and
among the nation's top 30 according to The Sporting News and Basketball
Weekly. That edition of the Stags also ranked among the top 10
teams in the nation in team offense with a scoring average of 86.5
points a game.
The 1978-79 team finished as the number two team in the
nation, behind only UCLA, in team field goal percentage (.540) and
third in the nation in team free throw percentage (.770).
Barakat is a native of Union City. N.J. and is a 1961 graduate of
Assumption College. At Assumption, he sparked a team that became
a Division II national power. He captained the Greyhounds as a senior
and was named to the Little All-America team. He was also an outstanding
catcher on the baseball 1team.
Following his graduation with a B.A. in History,
and a brief tryout with the Knicks, Barakat
returned to New Jersey to coach at Hasbrouck
Heights High SchooL
After five seasons on the high school level,
Barakat returned to Worcester, Mass. and Assumption
College to assist his former coach Andy
Laska.
In 1969 he shifted to the University of Connecticut
to assist Dee Rowe before moving on to
Fairfield the following year.
Barakat, who is also kept very busy as the
assistant athletic director at Fairfield, earned his
M.A. in personnel and guidance from Montclair
Stale in 1966. He is also a member of the ProKeds
Advisory Staff.
He has served on the National Coaches Association
East-West All.Star game selection committee
and is a member of both the New England
and 1\fet New York Basketball Coaches Associations.
Fred and wife Florence have four children.
The oldest, 19-year-old Nancy is a sophomore at
Fairfield. Younger children are Christie (13),
Amy (12) and Ricky (6).
- ASSOCIATE COACH----1
Jack Phelan
Coach Phel·an is a 26-year-old native of Hartford, Ct., and
is coach Barakat's only full time assistant coach.
Now in his second season with the Stags, Phelan was an
outstanding scholastic p~ayer in Connecticut, earning All-State
honors at Northwest Catholic High School in Hartford.
Af·ter a year at St. Thomas More Pr.ep, he launched a stellar
career in basketball at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa. He
graduated from St. Francis in 1977.
At St. Francis, Phelan, a 6-foot-3 guard, was the team's top
scorer as a junior. His 20 field goals in a game against Duquesne
during his senior season is •a school record.
Fairfield fans know of his talent on the court, having
watched him perform for 'Vhe Red Flash in the first Boys' Club
Classic at Fairfield. His two-game effort there netted him AllTournament
honors.
His senior year •at St. Francis saw the Red Flash knock off
North Carolina-charlotte and its star Cornlbread Maxwell, a
team that was headed for the NCAA Final Four.
·The 26-year-old Phelan was drafted by the NBA Golden
state Warriors in the sixth round of the NBA draft. Perhaps a
more dramatic indication of his outstanding athletic ability was
the fact that he was signed to a two-year contract by the Pitts
burgh steelers of the NFL and survived the rugged Steeler
training camp right up .until the first exhibition game.
During the 1977-78 season coach Phelan served as the
assistant coach at Niagara and the following season he returned
to St. Francis to take an assistant coaching position.
Last year he took over as the Stag associate coach, replacing
Brendlan Suhr, who is now an assistant with the Atlanta
Hawks of the NBA.
Jack .and Patty Phelan live in Stratford and have a oneyear-
old son named Kenny.
Bob Baroni ASSISTANT COACH
Bob Baroni, ·a 1967 graduate of the University
of Dayton, is now in his third year as an
assistant coach of the Stags.
Coach Baroni works in all aspects of the
game, on the court with the team at practices and
on the bench for games. He also spends many
hours on the road in scouting and recruiting.
Prior to joining the Fairfield staff, Baroni
was the head basketball coach at Masuk High
School in Monroe, Conn. At Masuk, Baroni had
his team in the semi·finals of the state schoolboy
tournament twice.
During Baroni's reign at Masuk, he coached
former Duke University All-America Mike Gminski,
now the starting center for the New York Nets.
Bob and wiie Lynette have two children, Robby who is five-yearsold,
and one-year-old Danielle.
Jim Kish ASSISTANT COACH
Coach Kish is also entering his third season
as a Stag assistant coach.
Kish, a 1957 graduate of the University of
Bridgeport, served as the head basketball coach
at Harding high school in Bridgeport, Conn., before
joining the staff .at Fairfield.
While at Harding, Kish developed one of the
finest schoolboy programs in New England. In
ten seasons his teams posted a record of 17848
and won two Connecticut Class L championships
and finished as the runner-up four times. His last
six seasons as head coach saw Harding put together
a record of 128-23.
One of the stars at Harding during coach
Kish's tenure was Wes Matthews, an All-America at Wisconsin and now
a starter for the Washin~ton Bullets.
Coach Kish and w1fe Mary have f-our daughters, Maureen, Patty,
Sheila and Kerry.
Phil Samko HEAD TRAINER
The head athletic trainer at Fairfield University
is 26-year-old Phil Samko.
Sam oversees the health and well being of not
only the basketball team1 but all of the intercollegiate
teams at the Umversity.
A graduate of the University of Connecticut,
where he also worked as an assistant trainer, Sam
holds a bachelors degree in physical therapy and
biology.
Sam is a native of Worchester, Mass., where
he also works at the PGA t<>umament at the
Pleasant Valley Country Club, helping with the
needs of the pro golfers at that tour st<>p. He
assists his father at that event. Sam's father spent
many years as the head trainer at Holy Cross.

will be broadcast over the Stag Basketball Network.
This will be the sixth consecutive season the network has been on
the air.

for the third year in .a row.
Ritzert, who handles the pl•ay-by-play, is the sports and news director
at radio station WNAB in Bridgeport. The Voice of the Stags
handled the team during the 1971 - 1974 seasons and later returned to
the mike in 1978.
Carroll is the director of the network and takes care of the color
commentary. He is a veteran sports broadcaster in the Fairfield County
area and also co-chairman of the Bankers' Classic.
Major home games this year will be televised by channel-49 in
Bridgeport, part of the Connecticut Public Television network. The station
studios are located on the University campus.
Stags' Outlook for 1980-1981
"When you come to see the Stags this year", Fred Barakat was saying
to a group of fans, "be sure to pick up a program on the way in."
A program would be needed, the coach advised because there are a
lot of new faces in Fairfield uniforms.
The Stags lost three players to graduation from last year's 11-16
team, and guard Rich Broggini was forced to forego his senior season
because 'Of a chronic back injury.
Coming in, meanwhile, are seven new players.
Among the seven is 6-foot-6 sophomore forward Henry Foster. He
is back with the team aft~r sitting out a season. As a freshman during the
1978-79 season, Foster was a starter, getting seven points and five rebounds
a game and showing outstanding potential.
His return is <>ne of the reasons the Stags can be expected to be much
improved as <a rebounding team.
Another reason the Stags wiU be more potent under the hoop is a
~foot-8 junior forward named Rich Wejnert.
He is a transfer from the University of South Carolina who sat
out last season waiting to be eligible this year. Fairfield fans have been
waiting anxiously for Wejnert to become eligible.
There are sound reasons for their expectations. Wejnert was a bona
fide scholastic All-American at St. Anthony's high school in Jersey City,
N.J. He was highly recruited by the big schools, and chose South Carolina.
He started for the Gamecocks as a freshman. Midway into his
sophomore year he decided he would rather be closer to home.
Wejnert is a scorer and a rebounder, more help up front for coach
Barakat.
The addition of Foster and Wejnert will supplement the big man
corp of 6-foot-6 senior Mike Palazzi and centers Pete DeBisschop (~footH)
<and Mickey Herzing (6.Joot-10).
Palazzi is a three-year veteran and the most experienced player on
the team. DeBisschop started most games last year and Herzing (knock
on wood) has shaken the injury hex that has plagued him in the past.
There is one other forward, a 6-foot-6 freshman named Jerry Johnson.
He was a first team All-New York City selection and looks to be a strong
rebounder.
The Stags are deep in the guard spot with six people after playing
time.
Freshman Bobby Hurt is most impressive as the point guard. He
moves like a jet, handles the baU and penetrates, a pure point guard.
Veteran guards include Ken Daniels, a starter at point guard for
a while last year, Rich D'Antonio, a player who matured very weU over
the last seven games last year and Spencer Harrison a player who can get
points on the board in a hurry, and is t he top scorer returning from
last season. Mike Aldridge, a trallbier from Florida, adds depth to the
backcourt.
Freshman Joe Sharkey, a 6-foot 4 shooter will also see plenty of
action and he could also help out up front.
S<> there will be a lot of new faces, and they all can play. After last
year's lowly mark, things are looking up again at Fairfield.

Metro Atlantic Conference
The basketball season next year, the 1981-a2 campaign, will offer
a dynamic new dimension for Fairfield University and its fans.
Next year rthe Stags will be playing in the newly-formed Metro
Atlantic Conference. Joining Fairfield in this conference will be Army,
Iona, Manhattan. St. Peter's and Fordham.
The Stags will be meeting each of the other five conference teams
twice, on a home-and-home basis. In addition a post season playoff will
be conducted to crown the conference champion.
It is hoped that in the future, the Metro Atlantic Conference champion
will be awarded an automatic berth to the NCAA basketball tournament.
The Metro Atlantic Conference will be eligible for consideration
for an automatic bid in the 1983-84 season.
All six schools will continue to be members of the Eastern Colle~e
Athletic Conference (ECAC), although beginning next season they will
not take part in ECAC regional basketball playoffs.
"We are very happy after many months of hard work that we have
been able to develop such an attractive array of academic institutions
with outstanding reputations as major college basketball schools," said
Fairfield athletic director C. Donald Cook.
"We expect to have .a well-balanced, COilll>etitive league in a common
geographic area and have the distinction of sharing with all of the
schools comparable philosophical and academic attitudes toward inter-collegiate
athletics," Cook said, "and in addition, the conference will
form a sound competitive base from which we can develop our brood
base sports programs."
"I'm really excited about playing in the new conference," said Fairfield
head coach Fred Barakat, "I believe the conference will enhance
the spirit and enthusiasm of the students, players and alumni and only
lead to very positive results."
In announcing the formation of the Metro Atlantic Conference this
past October, the group also announced that Jim McDermott will serve
as the acting commissioner of the conference.
McDermott served 25 years as the basketball coach and athletic director
at Iona College.
While the conference currently has six members, there are several
other schools showing a strong interest in coming aboard, and it is possible
that there could be more than six by the time the conference
begins play next season.
