About Donald Woods
• A sth generation South African, Woods was Editor-inin-
Chief of the Daily Dispatch. He was prosecuted by
the State 7 times for editorial criticism of apartheid.
• In 1977 he was arrested and banned for publishing
details of the killing of his friend Steve Biko.
• After personal attacks on his family by police,
he escaped with his wife and s children. He
now resides in London.
• He is Director of the Lincoln Trust which
supplies information about apartheid to
the international media.
• He is author of Biko, translated into 12
languages; Asking for 7touble, an awardwinning
autobiography, and Black and White.
• Woods' escape from South Africa is the
subject of a British docudrama recently
shown on us Cable Network.
• The story of his life, produced and directed by Sir Richard Attenborough,
(Ghandi), will be distributed by Universal Studios next year.
