Historical Note
Biographical Summary
Rev. William C. McInnes, S.J. (January 20, 1923 – December 8, 2009) was a member of the Society of Jesus with a distinguished career as an educator and administrative leader in the academic world. Fr. McInnes served in WWII in the United States Army as a meteorologist, and received a B.A., B.S., and masters degree from Boston College and a doctorate in business administration from New York University. He served as the 5th President of Fairfield University from 1964 to 1973 and President of the University of San Francisco from 1972 to 1977. (He served as the president of both universities simultaneously for a few months in 1972.) He then headed the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), a consortium of Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, from 1977 until 1989. In 1990, Fr. McInnes became parochial vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Parish in Storrs, Connecticut, where he served as campus minister to the University of Connecticut. In 1998, Fr. McInnes rejoined Boston College as an adjunct professor at the Carroll School of Management, the faculty advisor for BC's chapter of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit honor society, and a chaplain for the Alumni Association. He remained part of the Boston College community until his death on December 8, 2009, from complications of cancer and a fall at the Campion Center Jesuit retreat facility in Weston, Massachusetts, at the age of 86.
Early life
William C. McInnes was born on January 20, 1923 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to parents William and Mary (Byrne) McInnes. He was one of three children, including his sister, Helen and brother, Paul. He lived in Boston during his early childhood before the family purchased a home in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Fr. McInnes attended local public schools In Quincy and then enrolled in Boston College in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 after noticing an ad on a Boston College bulletin board promising to train students as meteorologists. The United States Army trained him as a meteorologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then travelled with the Army Air Forces as a meteorology officer during World War II, serving in China, Africa and India. He was stationed in Assam for six months and later worked in Shanghai.
Fr. McInnes graduated from Boston College in 1944 and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1946. He initially enrolled in Saint John's Seminary in Massachusetts following World War II, intending to become a diocesan Roman Catholic priest. However, John Drummey, a professor at Boston College, recommended that he join the Jesuit order instead. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1946 and studied philosophy at Weston College. After earning a master’s degree in business from Boston College, Fr. McInnes then obtained a doctorate in business administration from New York University. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1957. In doing so, he became one of the first Jesuits to specialize in business administration.

Boston College
Fr. McInnes joined the faculty of Boston College in 1959, and from 1961 to 1964 was an associate dean of the College of Business Administration (later the Carroll School of Management). Fr. McInnes would continue to have a strong association with the college, returning later in life in the 1990s as an adjunct faculty member and chaplain.
Fairfield University
Fr. McInnes was appointed as the fifth President of Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut by the Jesuits in 1964, a position he would hold until 1973. He oversaw the rapid expansion of the university's campus and student population during his presidency. Under President McInnes, the overall student enrollment at Fairfield doubled to nearly 2,500 students. During his tenure, the Graduate School of Corporate and Political Communication opened (1966), the School of Nursing evolved from a department into a separate School of Nursing (1970), and the Center for Lifetime Learning offered its first courses (1973). Although some female students attended graduate classes as early as 1951, Fairfield University remained primarily a male-dominated institution and did not officially go co-ed until the fall of 1970, when women were admitted for the first time into all undergraduate programs.
As a leader and administrator during the sixties, Fr. McInnes continued to guide the university through many changes. He was the last Jesuit to be both President and Rector; instead, Fr. McInnes resigned the rectorship and actively became a much more public figure around the campus than his predecessors had been. During his term the Office of the President relocated from Bellarmine Hall to Canisius Hall, closer to the students, faculty and classrooms. Through his efforts the by-laws of the university charter were amended and the Board of Trustees was created. He employed more laymen in posts of responsibility than ever before, and was also the first President to employ the idea of divided responsibility at the vice presidential level, appointing vice presidents for finance, academic affairs, student services, and others.
As President McInnes faced many challenges, not the least of which was the Tilton vs. Richardson case. In this landmark lawsuit, Fairfield University, along with Annhurst, Albertus Magnus, and Sacred Heart University, became embroiled in a controversy that questioned the legality of religious-based institutions like Fairfield to secure federal funds under the Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Fairfield in 1971, ensuring the university a significant amount of much-needed federal money which contributed to the construction of the Nyselius Library (1968) and Bannow Science Center (1971). Father McInnes also oversaw the construction of four more residence halls, Regis (1965), Jogues (1968), Kostka (1970) and Claver (1972). The original Barone Campus Center (1966), named in honor of Dr. John A. Barone, was also constructed during this time, as was the Central Utility Facility (1970).
As student unrest erupted during the late sixties on campuses across the nation, Fairfield experienced its share of turbulence. Protests on issues ranging from dress code to Vietnam were brought to the attention of the McInnes administration. Most notably, in November 1969 a group of African American students presented the administration with a list of demands and later seized possession of Xavier Hall. Fr. McInnes negotiated directly with the students involved, eventually agreeing to most of their Inventory of the Papers of Rev. William C. McInnes, S.J. P a g e | 4

demands, including a commitment to hiring minority faculty members and increasing the number of black students at the university.
In 1972, Fr. McInnes was appointed president of the University of San Francisco. However, he remained the president of both Fairfield and San Francisco simultaneously for four months during the Fall 1972 semester while transitioning between the two colleges. Fr. McInnes officially stepped down as president of Fairfield University in 1973 and was succeeded by Thomas R. Fitzgerald, S.J.
University of San Francisco
Fr. McInnes was appointed president of the University of San Francisco in 1972. He simultaneously served as president of both San Francisco and Fairfield University for four months during the transition between the two universities. The University of San Francisco was in a deep financial crisis at the time of Fr. McInnes' arrival in 1972. Fr. McInnes instituted a series of financial reforms which resulted in a corrected, balanced budget for the university. Fr. McInnes initiated negotiations which led to the acquisition of the now defunct San Francisco College for Women campus on Lone Mountain. Today, the Lone Mountain campus houses administrative offices, classrooms and the offices of the university's president and vice president. Fr. McInnes also founded the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning, a program for retirees, during his tenure as president.
Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU)
Fr. McInnes departed the University of San Francisco in 1977 to become the head of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), a consortium consisting of the twenty-eight Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. He served as the head of the AJCU for twelve years. His position allowed him to meet both Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II. Fr. McInnes stepped down as head of the AJCU in 1989.
Later Life
In 1990, Fr. McInnes became parochial vicar of St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Parish in Storrs, Connecticut, where he served as campus minister to the University of Connecticut. He was the first Jesuit priest to hold that assignment.
In 1998, Fr. McInnes rejoined Boston College as an adjunct professor at the Carroll School of Management. He also became the faculty advisor for BC's chapter of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit honor society. Fr. McInnes campaigned to build a Vietnam War memorial on the Boston College campus. The memorial, which measures 70 feet long and commemorates members of the Boston College community killed in Vietnam, was formally dedicated on November 11, 2009. Fr. McInnes also served as a popular chaplain to members of the University’s growing Alumni Association. During a decade in this position, Fr. McInnes attended scores of Boston College events and befriended and counseled countless BC students and graduates.
