He received his A.B. in Liberal Arts (1952) from Boston College, and one M.A. in Philosophy (1958) and a second M.A. in Theology (1962), both also from Boston College. He held an M.S. in Mathematics (1964) from Fordham University and an Ed. D. in Mathematical Education (1972) from the Columbia University Teaching College. In the Mathematics Department at Fairfield University, Father MacDonnell was an assistant professor from 1969 – 1978. He received tenure in 1972. He was an associate professor from 1978-1985, and from 1985 until his death was a full professor at Fairfield. His areas of expertise were geometry and the history of mathematics. Father MacDonnell is notable for having studied in Iraq on more than one occasion: he studied at Baghdad College from 1955-1958, and then at Al Hikma University in Baghdad from 1965-1969. He wrote several articles on that and many other subjects; he is also responsible for two displays at the university. The first is one of framed posters of Jesuit Postage Stamps which as of 2014 hangs in the library; the other is a realia display of 3-dimensional ruled surfaces which hangs in the renovated Bannow Science Center Atrium. His professional memberships included the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematical Society, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also an active member in the Clavius Research Mathematicians. In 1986 he was named Teacher of the Year by Alpha Sigma Nu, the Fairfield chapter of the National Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The Fairfield University students dedicated the 1997 yearbook The Manor to Father MacDonnell.
