Reverend Sir:
Thank you for yours of December 19th, together with the lovely picture of the Blessed Virgin and the greetings which it contains.
Thank you for the photographs you enclose, which reassure me that Fuji is still holding its own. The “images” as you call them are Japanese lanterns, as I recall them, sometimes arranged to be lighted with candles and at other times simply to serve as symbols. I am delighted that Fuji merited the exclamation of the student who has seen the original.
Regarding the torii, I think the second one you refer to stood near the fence in which the torii served as a gateway. The dimensions of both torii were the same and consequently if you copy the present one that will be exactly right. They should be painted red, - a dull red without gloss. When you put up the new one it would be wise if you can secure chestnut wood to use, rather than other wood, because it decays very slowly. If, however, you cannot find that kind of wood, give whatever you do find a heavy coat of creosote.
Sincerely yours,
Arthur A. Shurcliff

P.S. In case both torii have disappeared, you can make new ones using round vertical timbers about 6 inches in diameter. The horizontal timbers should be rectangular in cross-section. The headroom should be about 7 feet about ground, and the distance between uprights about 4 feet. Regarding the shape and cross-section of the lintel, you will do well to consult some good photographs. Doubtless there are many in your local library. – A.A.S.
