Notes	This is the first of three letters from the landscape architect Arthur A. Shurcliff to Rev. Anthony J. Eiardi, S.J. In 1956 Father Eiardi wrote to Shurcliff asking for his recollections regarding the Japanese Garden at Bellarmine Hall (formerly the Lashar residence), which Eiardi was interested in maintaining and restoring. Shurcliff (nee Shurtleff) was responsible for the original creation of the garden in 1926. Father Eiardi sent to Shurcliff photographs of the garden. These Shurcliff returned in his later two letters with notes. Reverend Sir: I am greatly interested in your letters to me of May 28th and June 4th, which appear to describe the Lashar place which I laid out near Bridgeport so many years ago. If you will send me some snapshot photographs of some of the features, I shall be glad to give you my recollections concerning them. The whole layout made a great impression on me, - it was novel and fortunately true to the Japanese manner, since the late Langdon Warner, an authority on Japan, helped me with the design of the entrance, the bridge, and the general character of the sacred Mount Fujiyama.
