and becoming people for others."
FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY
F airfield University is a
coeducational, liberal
arts institution encompassing
three undergraduate
schools: the College
of Arts and Sciences, School of Business,
and School of Nursing. Students
who select the nursing major
receive maximum exposure to their
career field. Classroom instruction in
nursing theory and skills begins
freshman year and clinical hands-on
courses begin sophomore year. By
senior year students are ready to
select an area of concentration in critical
care, emergency room, medical,
maternity, pediatric, psychiatric or
community nursing. Many students
choose to complement their nursing
studies with minors in areas such as
psychology, modern languages and
business.
Students at Fairfield experience
nursing in many diverse settings with
its clinical programs at the universityteaching
hospital at Yale New Haven;
city hospitals such as St. Vincent's
Medical Center in Bridgeport;
suburban hospitals in Greenwich
and Norwalk; as well as rehabilitation
centers and public health
departments.
The high-caliber faculty in the
School of Nursing, while involved in
research and publishing, are committe~
to teaching and giving each student
individual guidance. More than
60 percent of the faculty hold doctoral
degrees.
While the School of Nursing maintains
an enrollment of approximately
200 students to ensure small classes and
individualized guidance, it benefits
from the high technology that normally
only a larger institution can afford.
When computers were gaining acceptance
as valuable tools in health care
settings, Fairfield was at the forefront of
adding computer instruction to its curriculum.
Today computer programs can
simulate patient conditions, allowing
students to experience case situations
and practice critical decision-making.
Marks of Success:
Hospital recruiters seek out Fairfield
grads when hiring. At commencement,
nursing graduates are among
the highest paid and most in demand.
In recent years graduating seniors
have had a 100 percent passing rate
on the national licensing examination.
Graduate Studies are pursued by over
50 percent of nursing graduates
according to alumni surveys. They
are enrolled in health care-related
fields at universities such as Johns
Hopkins, Yale, Columbia, Emory and
the University of Pennsylvania.
Nursing Students are involved. They
have held top office in the Connecticut
Student Nurses Association; been
selected for Student Acheivement
Awards presented by the Fairfield
University Alumni Association; captained
the varsity swim team; and
been awarded the Fuld Fellowship, a
national award which involves traveling
to an international conference.
Graduates say what helped them most
in their education, was the individualized
attention they received and
the technical and professional competence
they gained.
tudents who enroll in the
School of Nursing at Fairfield
University become
part of a spirited university
that has established itself
as one of the finest institutions of
higher education in the country. During
its 50-year history Fairfield has
drawn on the 450 year Jesuit tradition
to create a distinctive identity as a university
that fosters intellectual development
and a compassionate concern
for others.
Academics
The liberal arts core at Fairfield provides
training in analysis, synthesis and
communication and helps students to
assimilate and organize facts, identify
issues and convey conclusions persuasively,
all skills that are essential to any
major, but especially to nursing. Students
in the Arts and Sciences, Business
and Nursing all share these and
other classes and separate only for
courses in their special fields.
Fairfield University has 189 fulltime
faculty, with a student to faculty
ratio of 15:1, allowing for relatively
small classes and easy access to faculty
for individual advising. Fairfield
does not permit graduate assistants to
teach, and senior faculty teach freshman
and sophomore courses as well
as upper division classes.
Major college guides list Fairfield
University among the leading universities
in the country, including Barron's
The Most Prestigious Colleges,
U.S. New & World Report's America's
Best Colleges, and Edward Fiske's
The Selective Guide to Colleges, which
notes, "the highly respected Nursing
School offers a variety of excellent
clinical experiences."
Where Friendships are Made
Students and visitors alike are won
over by Fairfield's friendly atmosphere.
While there is a natural bond
among nursing students, they build
friendships beyond their major and
class year. With a diversified student
body that represents 33 states and 17
countries, and a College of Arts and
Sciences and a School of Business on
campus, students socialize and work
on university projects with students
from a wide range of backgrounds
and interests. At commencement
most students feel their four years
have passed much too quickly but
know they take with them friendships
that will last a lifetime.
Residential Life
Where to live after freshman or sophomore
year is never a problem at
Fairfield where housing is available
for four years. Many upperclass students
live in modern townhouses on
campus in groups of four or six. Students
value this more independent
living style which prepares them for
living on their own once they begin
their careers.
The Arts
The fine arts, always an important
part of Fairfield University, have
taken on a new emphasis with the
opening of the Regina A. Quick Center
for the Arts in 1990. Live performances
in music, dance and theatre,
acclaimed art exhibits and stimulating
lectures enhance classroom
studies and help students develop
their aesthetic appreciation. In addition
student talent is showcased in
drama productions and in the Fairfield
University Glee Club, Jazz
Ensemble and Orchestra.
Athletics
As a Division I school, athletes compete
in the top collegiate level of their
sports. While basketball is the best
known, with both the men's and
women's teams having advanced to
NCAA tournaments, 15 varsity sports,
including tennis, swimming, cross
country, volleyball and field hockey,
are offered along with club sports
and intramurals. In addition, students
keep fit by using the modern
facilities of the Recreational Complex
with its 25-meter pool, jogging track,
sauna, exercise and aerobics rooms
and indoor tennis, basketball and
raquetball courts.
Reaching Out
Opportunities are plentiful for students
to volunteer their talents and
experience worlds and peoples
beyond their own community. Campus
Ministry's programs take stu-
dents to Ecuador, Jamaica and Haiti
as well as Connecticut's own urban
area to work with the poor. A wide
range of activities offered by campus
ervice organizations, academic clubs
(which include the Student Nurses
As ociation) and special interest
groups, present outlets for all kinds
of interests and abilities.
Recreation
Most students seek out social activities
on campus with the Fairfield
University Student Association (FUSA)
the driving force behind formal
dances, concerts, class picnics, comedy
nights, activity fairs and movies.
FUSA oversees a substantial budget
that funds some 23 programs and 40
clubs. The Inter Residence Hall Government
also sponsors activities
within the residences.

"Fairfield University nursing graduates
are confident and articulate professionals
who come clinically prepared to accept
the challenges of this very demanding job.
Their holistic approach to patient care
takes into account the family and makes
them real patient advocates. I find they are
internally motivated to succeed and are
team players who really care about the
nursing profession."
