Fairfield University is a Catholic
and a Jesuit University. Its primary
objective is the development of the
creative intellectual potential of
each of its students within the
context of religious commitment.
Following the Jesuit tradition,
Fairfield believes in the particular
excellence of a liberal arts education
in achieving this objective,
and offers its students a carefully
integrated program of liberal
arts courses.
Nursing is a profession which
has evolved from the health needs
of society, and has been shaped
by the knowledge, skills. and personalities
of its practitioners. It
is a profession rich in association
with people and in the rewards of
providing needed service.
The Nursing Program at Fairfield
seeks, within the context of the
small. church-related, liberal arts
college, to prepare graduates who
will be able to practice professional
nursing competently and
compassionately, in a variety of
settings in which people with
health needs are encountered. It
will also prepare its graduates to
continue their education at the
graduate level.
The University's campus. comprising
more than 200 acres, is
endowed with exceptional natural
beauty. From an elevation of 180
feet and at a distance of two miles,
it commands a broad view of
Long Island Sound.
It lies a mile north of Fairfield
Center and five miles west of the
city of Bridgeport. It is fifty miles
from New York City on the Penn
Central Railroad. The University is
three miles from the Merritt Parkway
(Exit 44) and a half mile
from the Connecticut Turnpike
(Exit 22).
The School of Nursing is housed
in the recently completed Bannow
Science Center. This multi-million
dollar structure. with expanded
research facilities and laboratories,
is located close to the
Campus Center, Library and
all dormitories.

General Information
Accreditation
The Nursing Program at Fairfield
University has been accredited by
the State Board of Examiners for
Nursing, and by the Commission for
Higher Education of the State of
Connecticut. National accreditation
by the National League for Nursing
will be sought when the program is
eligible for it in 1974.
Admission Requirements
Academic requirements for admission into the
program will be the same as for all students
admitted to the University:
Academic Requirements
1. No less than fifteen units in college preparatory
study, among which must be at least three units in
high school mathematics, and one of laboratory
science.
2. Rank in the upper half of the applicant's senior
class.
3. A composite score on the College Board
Aptitude Examinations of at least 1000.
4. Achievement tests in English, Mathematics and
one elective.
Personal Requirements
A personal interview with the Dean or member
of the Nursing faculty or both will be required of
all qualified applicants for admission to the
program so that some assessment of the student's
personal qualities may be made and so that the
student will have the opportunity to meet a
representative of the program.

The fac1l1ties aHorded by these three
hosp1tals are excellent and extensive . All
three adm1t medical, surg1cal. obstetrical.
and pediatrrc patients. All have act1ve Out·
Patient departments. Stamford Hosp1tal will
open a 25-bed un1t for psychiatnc patients
early m 1970 St. Joseph's Hosp1tal has
extens1ve facilities for the care of the
chron1cally-111 and the aged The three
hosp1tals are accredited by the Joint
CommiSSIOn on the Accreditation of
Hospllals of the American Med1cal AssoCiation

Student Services
The Office of the Dean of Student Services
administers affairs related to housing,
guidance, counseling, student health and
welfare and student activities. An Assistant
Dean of Women is on his staff to assist and
counsel women students in their personal
problems in adjustment to college and their
plans and progress in college life.
In addition each of the students in the
Nursing Program is encouraged to seek the
counsel of the Dean of the School of Nursing
or of a member of the nursing faculty on all
matters related to their program. Each
student is assigned a nursing faculty advisor
and regular hours for counseling will be
maintained.
A wide variety of student activities are
available to students at Fairfield. These
include student government, athletics, both
varsity and intramural. and membership in
clubs for drama, music, philosophy.
languages, etc.
An infirmary is maintained for students in
Loyola Hall. staffed by registered nurses
with a physician in attendance daily.
Students in the Nursing Program will be
required to have an annual physical and
x-ray, and to present evidence of up-to-date
immunization before beginning their clinical
nursing courses.
