The Chad Mitchell Trio
THE CHAD MITCHELL TRIO stands alone in the currently swirling
folk m~.;sic scene. It is neither "ethnic" nor "pop folk." Instead, Tha Chad
Mitchell Trio is a gro1.1p that has chosen folk music as the most effective and
artistic medi1.1m in which it ca.n express itself.
Ideas mean a great deal with The Chad Mitchell Trio. The mus1c must
be there too, bd unless a song has the lyrical meaning, they will not sing if.
As a result, the Trio preserves the meaning and fee l,ing of each song that it
e ssays, rather than the traditional restricted way of songs being sung- I~ a
lyric can be improved without impairi.ng the essence of a tune, The Cnad
Mitchell Trio wi ll do it, th1.1s separating t~em from the "ethnics." On the
other hand, t heir respect for the meaning and artist ic values of a fo lk song
keeps them even more irretrievably out of the "pop folk" bag.
The Trio finds its material everywhere - field recordings, The Library
of Congress, from other fo lk singers - even from satiric revues. One satisfying
result of the now-s1.1rging folk market is that ma.ny urban folk songs
have been created, songs 'Mith as much vita lity as those that have been
handed down for generations. If it has musical worth and lyrical significance,
the urban fo lk song will stand right alongside the chain gang " holler" in
the repertoire of the Trio.
The Chad Mitchell Trio originated at Gonzaga University in Spokane,
Washington, when the three suddenly became aware of folk music through
the then-popular recording of "Tom Dooley."
As their fortunes have increased, so has their i.nterest in the art of the
folk song. When rehearsing a new number with their musical director, Milt
Okun, they will work, rework and rework a line until it is perfect. Their goal
as singers? Simply to become better; and when they have become better,
to become better than that.
You are welcome to take pictures, but NO FLASHBULBS will be
permitted.
