Henceforth it is to be known as the Simon Harak-Rev. John P. Murray, S.J. Memorial Conc.ert in honor of the cofounders of the Glee Club. We might go on to say that it is altogether fitting and proper that we do this, etc. but Abraham Lincoln has sort of stolen our thunder in his Gettysburg Address; but the sentiment is the same: for the debt we owe these two fine men for the existence and character of the Glee Club is difficult to express, yet real and recognizable, though it may require a person with the sensitivity of a Lincoln to put it into words. So we will content ourselves with the mention of the fact and make no attempt to describe our consciousness of our debt to Mr. Harak and Father Murray. Since we are talking of the Glee Club and its founders, it seems fitting also to mention here some other men to whom the Glee Club has been indebted through the years, our Graduate Assistants or Graduate Advisers. We would like, first of all, to acknowledge the many years of service so generously given by Mr. Bronislaw Orlowski and Ralph Ferriolo In the past, and the present devotedness of Mark Lombardi, William Kessler, Kenneth Fredyna, and more recently Gary Long. Bill Kessler and Ken Fredyna render in- 1 valuable service with their managerial skills: they build and repair risers, shells, lights and almost anything else that needs building or rebuilding or repair. The other advisers, less handy with their hands, are especially useful in serving as a sort of buffer between the members of the Club and the Moderator and Director. For example, no one really believes Mark Lombardi when he says the Club left New Rochelle after the mixer at "about 1:15 or 1:20" and arrived at Fairfield at 2:45A.M. It couldn't possibly have taken the bus that long to arrive from New Rochelle! But, since it was a good party and the next day was a Saturday, we'll accept his account. Apart from such maternal solicitude for the members of the Club the advisers provide a bond of continuity over the years and by their continued interest in the Club encourage the changing membership year after year. We do appreciate their interest and help and are glad of the opportunity to acknowledge our gratitude. Perhaps the highlight of this year's concert season was the trip we made to Washington, D.C. We spent five days or so in the Capital. Most of us saw the points of interest, the Smithsonian exhibits, the Capitol and White House. Mike Shelburne invited President Carter to our concert with Trinity College, but his secretary just couldn't fit it into his schedule. Anyway, we received a nice note of regret from the White House and no harm was done. The Club also sang at the regular 4:30P.M. Mass at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the grounds of the Catholic University of America. If you really must know what we did with the rest of our time, it was spent in rehearsals (at least a day and a half) and some time was allotted to seeing the sights. After all no one goes to Washington to see the insides of concert auditoria! Since these are supposed to be only notes, and the printer is waiting for our copy, we''ll omit further generalities and introduce the members of the Club who will be graduating this year. WILLIAM BRUNO who is mysteriously called "Tim" by everyone who knows him has spent four years with the Club as manager and in this, his final year, has been Chief Manager. He majored in Economics and Classics and is often enough late to rehearsal in the Spring because he also plays on the soccer team. Tim comes from Philadelphia and plans to return there and enter a management trainee program. Tim is a bright cheerful young man and the girls say he is "a nice kid". JUSTIN COLLINS saw the light late in life and joined the club as a Junior. His early years at Fairfield were dissipated in athletics and movies but he gave sufficient time to studies to sustain an ambition to pursue a career in marketing "in the real world". He is a Business major (Marketing), and eventually plans to enter graduate school. His chief claim to fame in the Glee Club is his Steve Brodie-like successful (though unintentional) slide down an up escalator in Washington. We have photographic evidence of the results of this slide but the nature of the bruises and the part of the anatomy involved preclude publication of the photos. WALTER J. HRYCENKO pronounce it any way you can! Walter has given four years to the Glee Club and in this, his senior year, has been Executive Secretary, an office with no specific duties which means the Moderator can call on him at alf hours of the day or night for all possible or impossible tasks. Walter has also kept an eye on the music for the Club so that he has also filled the office of Librarian, without the title. He is a Biology Major and plans to teach biology, chemistry or religion. He has been a Resident Adviser in the dormitories for the past two years, plays the Cordovox in the Glee Club Band, and at our request is no longer practicing the song Nola. Walter has been one of the pillars of the Club and we especially hate to see him go. · JOHN FINN is another late convert to the Glee Club. He is a History major and managed to keep quite busy in the years before he came to us. He played Rugby for three years, was a member of the St. Mary's Tutoring Program for three semesters and President for two semesters; he was also a member of the Student Entertainment Com- 2 mittee and played intramural basketball for four years. John seems to be a very quiet person but we may only get that impression because he sings in the bass section. Basses are never really noticed, they are just sensed! FRANK HOFFMANN has been a first tenor in the Club for all four of his years at Fairfield. He is a Religious Studies major and claims he loves it. He enjoys going to concerts- that must mean attending concerts, not performing, presumably, but he always seems to enjoy performing also and hasn't missed a concert yet. He likes the theatre, all sorts, and all cultural events as well as canoeing, camping, swimming and the beach. (He doesn't mention baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet!) After graduation Frank plans to teach religion in High School somewhere around Syossett, New York. JAMES KENNEDY has spent three years with the Glee Club and in addition to singing likes dining out, playing softball and being an amateur comedian. We will vouch for this last item. While studying and singing at Fairfield, Jim has worked as a headwaiter at the Chart House Restaurant in New Haven. (This could be construed as a subtle ad for the place but since there is no malice in Jim we'll accept it as simply the mention of a fact.) He is to receive a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Psychology this June and after graduation plans to take part-time graduate courses and continue to work at that restaurant mentioned once already. The Bensonians JOHN KLIMAS is another late convert to the Glee Club and sings in the bass section. In support of the theory already mentioned, that basses tend to blend into the background and are not noticed much, John seems rather quiet. Perhaps it takes a couple of years in the Glee Club, or anywhere else for that matter, before people begin to take perceptible form and shape. John is an English major and plans to work after graduation. As a hobby he is a member of a drums corps. John is a capable young man and will do well in anything he undertakes. TIMOTHY O'ROURKE has been with the Club four years. Tonight, and we don't know how it happened, he is not with us for he has a part in the Fairfield University Playhouse production of Cabaret. Tim is a second tenor and gave up a full-grown mustache to remain in the Glee Club. He must have been at a rehearsal for Cabaret when the questionaires, on which these notes are based, was passed around so that his plans for the future are shrouded in mystery. We wish him luck and all success and are glad we have had him as a member of the Club for all these years. 3 TIMOTHY REILLY is still another one-year member of the Club. I suspect it is the edifying example of a roommate that finally prevailed over Tim and then others. Tim sings in the bass section, and with all these basses leaving we are going to have a problem again next year! Tim is a marketing major and plans to "pursue a business-oriented career in the real world" (all these business majors talk alike!). He also plans (tongue-incheek, we're sure) "to become a very wealthy person." Just in case he succeeds in his ambition, we'll drop off his name to the Development Office and they'll probably put a man on him. The Campus Minstrels ROBERT F. ROSS is one of our hardy perennials. It may seem like "14" years that he's been in the Club but in fact it is only four. He is an English major and claims he thrives on confusion and chaos which is, perhaps, the reason why he is the Resident Adviser on Gonzaga Ground-or it may be the effect of his being RA on Gonzaga Ground. It is not, however, the reason why he was chosen to be Student Director of the Campus Minstrels. Bob is a talented musician and (Aw!shucks) a likeable person who gets along well with everyone, And that's why he's director of the Minstrels. Bob also appears in the background behind the other three Bold Fenian Men; he's the disembodied blondish head you see over Paul Murphy's shoulder. ROCCO ROSSETTI is another of our one-year senior members of the Club. He was recruited to make up our quota of Italian names on the roster and also because we needed baritones. Rocky loves all types of water sports, classical and jazz music, tinkering with his car, and gardening (Now, that's Italian!). He is an Accounting/Finance major and plans to enter a large, progressive corporation as an accountant or financial analyst. (We hope this large, progressive corporation is legally respectable.) Once working, Rocky plans to continue studies toward an M.B.A. degree. We've enjoyed Rocky's short stay with the Club and wish he had gotten the light sooner. MICHAEL SHELBURNE is the President of the Club this year and has been a devoted member of the Club for the past three years. He claims he has had no time for anything else as far as extra-curricular activities go. He has been a member of the Campus Minstrels for three years, a Bensonian for the past two and claims he is the only Protestant in the Club, We'll take his word for that last for no one keeps tabs on such things, but if 4 we'd known sooner we'd have had Mr. LaMedica toss in many more Catholic hymns and we'd have sung in a lot more churches! Mike plans to get a job after graduation; it must be that Protestant work-ethic! THOMAS W. SMITH is the Vice-President of this year's Club, and after he was persuaded that the officers of the Club are executives and not trustees, settled down and did a very good job. Tom has been with us for four full years and has been a member of the Glee Club Band from its inception. He is majoring in English but has an interest in politics (which figures) and sports. He plans to enter St. John's University, the School of Law; and Tom will make a good lawyer. Tom has been a devoted and active member of the Club and has tried to promote its interests in every possible way. We are sincerely grateful for all he has done. He claims he has perfect pitch and has his guitar always in tune, but we know this is said facetiously for we heard him and the Bensonians in Danbury Tom is one of the less sedate members of the Minstrels and a member of the Bensonians. He's the one who lost one of our vests. FREDERICK "Bo" SORRENTINO a fast two-year old in the Club, he sings in the bass section. Bo likes, first of all to be called Bo rather than Frederick, then he likes skiing, classic automobiles and some other things he can't mean seriously. He is a History major and plans to enter business in the field of sales-management. MICHAEL WALSH is another of the pillars of the Club. He has been around for four years. A quiet young man off stage, it seems difficult to keep him from singing on stage. He has been a Minstrel from time immemorial, and a Bensonian taking a year's sabbatical this year. He is devoted to Irish music and is one of the Bold Fenian Men, the group you will have heard for the second time this year. Mike is an English major and after graduation plans to work for a while in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, an ecclesiastical equivalent of the Peace Corps. Mike is a good student as well as a good singer and, if we may step down for a moment from our standpoint as objective observers and offer advice, we hope he will continue his studies in graduate school. Whatever he does, we are convinced, Mike will do well and successfully. BRIAN VISOKA Y is another of our graduating managers. Despite his duties as President of the Student Government he has found time to come to rehearsals and concerts for the past three years. Brian didn't fill out the brief questionaire we sent to seniors on which we base these notes. Either his term as an executive officer has made him secretive about his life, plans and ambitions, or he plans to write a book of memoirs and is keeping his information to himself. Nevertheless, Brian has been a very helpful member of the Club as he has been a very efficient President of the Student government. We are proud to have had him with us. Simon Harak-Rev John P Murray, S.J Award Recipients L. to R. Mr Frederick Tartara, Michael Walsh, Walter Hrycenko, and Father Cardoni. This year one of the trustees of the Simon Harak-Rev. John P. Murray, S.J. Scholarship fund will announce this year's recipient of the scholarship award. The trustees are Mr. Frederick Tartaro, Attorney Richard Bepko, and the Honorable Edward Caldwell. The recipients of the award last year were Michael Walsh and Walter Hrycenko. Two awards were made last year because we were ready to make an award the year before but got the machinery into motion too late. 5 • • • The Ambassadors of Song David Marchitelli, '78, Accompanist Paul D.
