FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY IRROR Volume 22 Number 16 The Image of Fairfield Thursday, March 6, 1997 We're goin1 to the Big Dance!!! "Bring 'em on! Whoever's next, you better watch out!" -Greg Francis Fairfield 18, Canisius 12 1991 MAAC Tournament Champions GO STAGS!! "We're gonna bring it home next year, too..." -Shannon Bowman % Jennifer Panaro Editor-in -Chief Channel 12 referred to it as the "year of the antlers," and that it is. For ten years, the Fairfield Men's Basketball team has waited for this day to come again, the day that Fairfield would reign as MAAC Tourna-ment Champions and win a bid to the NCAA's. Canisius may have been the favored team, but Fairfield showed them who "the right choice was." In 1987, Mitch Buonaguro led the #7 seeded Stags to a MAAC Championship and in 1997, Paul Cornier did it again. Seniors Greg Francis and Sh-annon Bowman combined for 48 points, to lead the Stags to a 78-72 victory over Canisius' Golden Griffens. Francis, Bow-man and freshman Darren Phillip were selected for the All-Tour-nament team and Francis was named Tournament MVP. Didier Boucard made the All- Academic MAAC Team and John Tice, the All Freshman non Bow-man" filled the room. What's next for the Stags? Cormier must begin to pre- "I went to 8 o'clock Mass and prayed for a miracle, and it happened," Cormier said. MAAC team. When the Stags returned home on Tuesday, they were greeted with a warm welcome by their fans back home at Fairfield. Balloons, signs and cheers from the crowd all awaited the MAAC Champs. When Eric Roland announced that the Stags would arrive in fifteen minutes, the crowd grew in anticipation and the campus center suddenly errupted. The media swarmed the campus in hoopla, while the Stags were police escorted over to their cheering fans. One by one the Stags were called to the stage, and chants of"MVP" and "Shan-pare his team for the firstNCAA tournament game of his head-coaching career. The Fairfield Stags are optimistic as Francis locations include Winston-Sa-lem, NC; Pittsburg, PA; Auburn Hills, MI; Kansas City, MO; Memphis, TN; Charolette, NC; Salt Lake City, UT; or Tucson, AZ. Fairfield is entering the Tour-nament ranked 252nd out of 305 Division I teams according to the latest RPI rankings, most likely placing the Stags as the lowest rated team in the NCAA's. The NCAA seedings will be an- "Good things happen to good people, ancT that's what happened to these kids," Cormier said. confirmed, "Bring on whoever is next!" The Stags are entering the NCAA's with an 11-18 record and likely to draw Kansas (1), Minnesota (2), Kentucky (3) or the ACC champion. Possible nounced on Sunday night. For now, however, the MAAC Tournament Champi-ons are celebrating their much deserved victory and according to Bowman, "We'll do it again next year!"
