FairfieldN ursing FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING, FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT 06430 Fall1992 Volume III Mu Chi Chapter is Chartered On AprilS, 1992, another milestone for the Fairfield University School ofNursing was reached when the Mu Chi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was chartered. Sigma Theta Tau International is the honor society for nursing whose goals are co promote and recognize leadership, scholarship, research and outstanding achievement in nursing. The process to establish a Sigma Theta Tau Chapter was begun in May 1989 by a Steering Committee of faculty, alumni and students. After four years of hard work, the chapter received its charter in a special ceremony held in the University Chapel. A tOtal of 229 members were inducted into Mu Chi by Joan Riley, Ed.D., Third Vice President ofSigma Theta Tau International. Dr. Jim Fain, President ofYale's Delta Mu Chapter, and Dr. Robert Stepsis, Academic Vice President of Fairfield University, offered congratulatory remarks at the ceremony. Each year, Mu Chi, will induct into the chapter eligible junior and senior nursing students, as well as individuals identified as leaders in the community. Students and alumni who are currently members of Mu Chi are actively participating on the numerous chapter committees. Efforts to recruit more membership involvement on committees is ongoing. One of the first functions of the Mu Chi Chapter was sponsoring a research symposium this September. The presentations focused on collaborative research projects between School ofN ursing faculty and nurses 1992 Mu Chi Chapter officers are congratulated by Dr. Joan Riley, Third Vice President of Sigma Theta Tau Int. Dr. Suzanne MacA voy discussed the research she coordinated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut involving an assessment tool for predicting patients at risk for falls. Dr. Sheila Grossman described her collaborative study conducted at Hartford Hospital, which dealt with interventions to prevent blood loss among patients in critical care units. Officers of the Mu Chi chapter for 1992- 1993 year are Karen Stonkas Ponton ('74), President; Geralyn Radowiecki Spollett ('76), Presidem-Elect;Jo Ann Tomis ('85), Vice-President; Marie Jean Longo ('88), Secretary; Phyllis Rotella ('75), Treasurer. This year's faculty counselors are Joan Mohr, Senior Counselor, and Carole Pomarico, Junior Counselor. Newly elected members of the Nominating Committee, chaired by Dr. Marjorie Martin, include Helen Carroll ('92), and Christine DeLucas.
