COEDUCATION AT
FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY
There is a place for women in the
educational process at Fairfield University.
The attitudes of society toward higher
education for women have changed in
the last century and many individuals
have questioned the value of separate
education for men and women. We at
Fairfield believe that one of the greatest
strengths in American higher education
is the diversity of opportunities and
challenges it offers to interested students.
We are concerned that those students
may find their place at Fairfield. We are
interested that those students may grow
and develop into responsible citizens at
Fairfield. We are happy that both men
and women may now share the
educational opportunities we offer.
The current process of education differs
from past models. In fact, it differs even
from last year. A college education today
is an encounter. Young men and women
find it a time and place with various and
flexible dimensions. It includes people,
books, buildings, tastes, friends, styles,
money, time and ideas. Upon entering, a
man or woman must take up these
dimensions and use them to fashion the
kind of educational experience they feel
most nourishing for their growth.

This fashioning process leads to an
individual's personal development and,
to be most fruitful, needs guidance and
assistance. Fairfield's Jesuit traditions &
and heritage include valuable and
respected contributions to the education
of women as well as men.
We are concerned that our students may
take their place in the society of the
future and be involved in the
improvement of man's environment. We
realize the complex and awesome
contributions of technology to this

environment. However, we are also
aware of the more pressing need of
modern society: the improvement of
man.
As a strong liberal arts college we exist
that man may study man and, finding
this the work of a lifetime, may begin to
appreciate his place in this world.
What of the challenges presented to
young women on the threshold of
coeducation at Fairfield University?
We will expect a responsibility of our
women undergraduates, exercised with
maturity and freedom, yet we do not
intend to ca~t them adrift. Coeducation

will see the appointment of a dean of
women to counsel and support women
undergraduates as they take their
welcomed place on the Fairfield campus.
Every academic department will of
course, be open to all students. Extracurricular
activities thrive with the
initiative of students and the support
of the student government. Facilities
are being readied and improved that the
first women undergraduates will
immediately feel a part of our University.

Fairfield has established a special place
for itself in the diversity of American
higher education. It offers a personal
approach to qualitative education through
close faculty cooperation in its students'
programs. It is equally interested in the
man or woman who shows promise as a
poet, scientist, politician, artist or
educator.
Fairfield offers an exceptional campus
and a congenial and well-equipped
environment in which every student is
presented a multitude of opportunities
supported by capable faculty. The
initiative is the student's.
