The Mirror FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY Volume 25, Number 15 The Image of Fairfield Thursday, March 2,2000 Bush plays the Catholic card Presidential Hopeful to visit university on Friday By Drew Lutbern STAFF WRITER Motivated by the need to regain the support of Catholic voters, Republi-can presidential candidate George W. Bush has scheduled a campaign visit to Fairfield University on Friday morning. Bush has drawn the ire of many Catholics because of his controversial campaign stop at Bob Jones University, an institution known for its anti-Catholic views. There is some question on the part For move on George W. Bushes visit of Fairfield University officials as to whether the school's Jesuit identity is being exploited in order to give Bush's campaign some balance. "There was some concern over being exploited, as it was made very clear by Bush's campaign people that they wanted a Catholic institution," said Doug Whiting, Associate Vice President for Public Relations. "How-ever, this institution is significant and reputable enough to warrant a visit from a presidential candidate." Dr. James Simon, a Professor of Political Reporting at Fairfield Univer-sity shed some light on the political ramifications of Bush's decision to come to this campus. "(Bush) had to veer to the (conservative and religious) right in order to do well in the South Carolina primary," said Simon. "However, it's a long campaign, and things said in March may be forgotten in Novem-ber."
