IRROR Volume 24 Number 1 The Image of Fairfield Thursday, September 24,1998 A tragic welcome back John O'Dea Co-Commentary Editor The first weekend back for students was marred by an automo-bile accident on Reef Road involv-ing three Fairfield students. Jason McClure '02 and Blaise Silka '02 were struck on Reef Road just south of Edward Street, police and witnesses said. Colleen Capuzzi '01, driving a teal 1992 Saturn, struck the two at 1:43 a.m. on Saturday, September 12. Both McClure and Silka were rushed to Bridgeport Hospi-tal for treatment. McClure said he will undergo surgery on his knee on Friday and will miss the rest of the semester. According to one wit-ness, the Saturn struck the two students almost simultaneously. "I walked outside once and I heard a thump said the female stu-dent and Reef Road resident who dialed 911. "I thought maybe some people were hitting cars." "I saw one kid face down in the street in a pool of blood. I called 911 then I saw the other kid down the street." The driver of the car, Col-leen Capuzzi '01, declined to com-ment on the incident. Police refused to speculate whether alcohol played a part in the incident. The case is still under in-vestigation. The University has not yet determined if any disciplinary ac-continued on pg. 3 Fairfield supports its sports Matthew Payne and Paul Pennelli Co-assistant sports editors With the introduction of various new resources, the Fairfield University athletic program has made great strides in the past year and a half to improve its facilities here on campus. The University constructed the Athletic Center, for student-ath-letes, to include computer and study labs, a state- of-the art weight room, and indoor practice facilities. Over the summer the astro-turf University Field, was built over Campion Field, and currently Alumni Softball Field is under con-struction nearby. With the con-struction of these new facilities, it is apparent that Fairfield is dedi-cated to improving the University's athletic reputation by enabling the student-body, faculty, coaches, and student-athletes will be able to compete and exercise with more ease, and on better sites. University Field will be used as a practice and game facil-ity for many varsity sports, but in addition, the intramural program will have access to the field. Whereas in the past the unpredict-able fall and spring weather often muffled practice and game sched-ules, a special snow plow with a rubber blade will enable teams to play in virtually any weather.
