Christopher Shays and Host Peter Schwartz '97 photo: Kristen Sullivan Kristen Sullivan Assistant News Editor "I'm proud ofwhat I've done, not only if I win," Christopher Shays, Connecticut 4th district congressman said last Wednes-day, only six days prior to the election between himself and Democrat Bill Finch. Shays showed confidence throughout his halfhour segment on Fairfield University'sHAMchannel show "Pertinent Politics", which is hosted by Peter Schwartz. The format for "Pertinent Politics" allotted twenty minutes for audience questions, most of which were asked by the Col-lege Republicans. Shays fielded many questions that have been raised as pivotal campaign is-sues. In answer to Junior Chris Maroney's question "why didn' t Shays vote against partial birth abortions,' Shays replied that the partial birth abortion pill doesn't protect women or provide for health exemptions for the mother. Congressman Shays was asked by sophomore Alex Continued on page 3 Eucharistic Ministers commissioned Theresa Vitello Contributing Writer Seventeen Fairfield Univer-sity students displayed their de-votion to Christian service at the 7 p.m. mass in the Egan Chapel on Sunday, November 3rd when they offered Communion for the first time as newly commissioned Eucharistic ministers. There was a different atmo-sphere at the 7 p.m. mass that evening. Not only were the seats completely filled with students and community members, but family and friends of the poten-tial Eucharistic ministers were present as well. Students in their best Sunday dress and a red car-nation adorning their lapels anx-iously awaited the moment of their commissioning. The po-tential ministers scurried about the chapel before mass started, in order to give one another a reassuring smile or greeting as the moment they awaited drew nearer. During the homily, attendants were given insight as to the true meaning of offering Commun-ion. "Giving someone the body and blood of Christ means offer-ing them the best food and drink possible. It means seeing them through the eyes of God" said Father Stanley. He warned that serving others through becom-ing a Eucharistic minister should not be a claim to title or prestige, but a sanction of unity and love. And with this, the 17 potential ministers rose, approached the altar one by one to embrace the sacrament, and took their oath before the congregation. They stood in a line as they first re-ceived communion, then ac-cepted a congratulatory hug from Row 1: Terence McCarron '99, Jennifer Mazzo '00, Matthew day '00, Colette Donegan '00, Susan Maransky '99, Patricia Quintero, Grad School '97. Row 2: Carolyn Rusiackas, Assistant Chaplain, Liam Gorman '00, Corey Stephenson '00, Christine Kelleher '99, Jennifer Southard '98, Kimberly Soen '99, Luis Fernandez '00.
