WEEK OF 13,2006 Vol. 31, Iss. 25 - 20 pages FREE - Take One MIRROR www.FAIRFIELDMIRROR.coM The independent student newspaper of Fairfield University On Eagles'Wings Former BC asst. to coach Stags BY ALI BART For more than a month, the specula-tion grew by the day. It appeared at times that several different candidates would become the next men's basketball coach at Fairfield. But on Tuesday morning the uncer-tainty officially came to an end when for-mer Boston College Assistant Ed Cooley was introduced as Fairfield's eleventh head coach. Cooley, 36, fills the vacancy that opened on March 3 when former Head Coach Tim O'Toole announced that the university had decided not to renew his contract. He is the first black head coach in school history. "I hope that we can bring some suc-cess to this program that you haven't seen," Cooley said at a press conference in the Barone Campus Center lobby. "I want to make sure that each and every one of you here know how proud arid how apprecia-tive we are as a family and as a basketball staff... and that we will not accept anything less than 100 percent from our players on and off the floor." "We're happy to report that the increase is lower than last year's,'" said Lucas. . The total price of tuition, average room and board fees, the general fee, and additional costs and expenses will be $41,440, up from $39,330 last year. "I suppose it's good for us that they are increasing less, but it still doesn't really make sense given that they keep continu-ally over-accepting new students," said Kara Dooley '08. "I don't understand why it doesn't all even out." Lucas pointed out that the increase is smaller than at comparable schools. "This year, Boston College has announced a 6.6 percent increase, while Loyola College in Baltimore has announced a 6 percent increase. Villanova has increased tuition for freshmen significantly, with a 16% increase." "I think the 5.3% increase is still absurd considering that 2 out of those 3 universities are far more prestigious than Fairfield," said Evan Trowbridge '07. "But you also have to take into account the building projects here, and the lack of student population, compared to a school like BC, to fund those projects. So it's dif-ficult to assess and place blame here." After the increase, the university is projecting income of more than 130 mil-lion dollars for the '06-'07 fiscal year. More than 90% of these monies come from tuition revenues. Other funds come from returns on investments in the endowment and gifts to the university.
