Description:

Rev. Joseph D. Fitzgerald, S.J., the 3rd President of Fairfield University (1951-1958)
Father Fitzgerald was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1899. He studied at Boston College for a year before entering the Society of Jesus in 1918. After his ordination in June 1931, Father Fitzgerald returned to teach at Boston College until 1937. After serving as Dean at Boston College, he moved into the position of Dean at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, a post he held until 1948. He then became the Assistant Director of the New England regional office of the Jesuit Education Association and shortly thereafter was appointed Province Director of Studies in July 1951. Two months later, in September 1951, Father Fitzgerald was selected as the next president of Fairfield University and Rector for the Jesuit community.

Rev. Thomas R. Fitzgerald, S.J., the 6th President of Fairfield University (1973-1979)
Father Fitzgerald was born in 1922 in Washington, D.C. A graduate of St. Paul's Parochial School and Gonzaga High School, he studied at Georgetown University from 1938-1939, when he entered the Society of Jesus novitiate at Wernersville, Pennsylvania. Father Fitzgerald received his B.A. in 1945 and an M.A. in 1948 from Woodstock College. Ordained a priest in 1952 in Louvain, Belgium, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in Classical Languages from the University of Chicago in 1957. Father Fitzgerald served as president of Fairfield University from 1973 through 1979, overseeing the construction of the Student Recreational Complex and the Center for Financial Studies, which has since become the home of the Dolan School of Business. He also directed the creation of the School of Business in 1978, which had been the Department of Business Administration for 31 years within the College of Arts and Sciences. After leaving Fairfield in 1979, Father Fitzgerald became President of Saint Louis University and also went on to teach at Loyola College in Baltimore and Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Fairfield University created the Rev. Thomas R. Fitzgerald Chair in Marketing in his honor in 2004 as part of the Dolan School of Business.

Rev. William C. McInnes, S.J., 5th President of Fairfield University (1964-1973)
Father McInnes hailed from Boston College, where he had been Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration. He had B.A., B.S., and M.A. degrees from Boston College and a Ph.D from New York University. Father McInnes served as president during much of the sixties and his administration guided the university through many changes. McInnes was the last man to be both President and Rector. He resigned the rectorship and became a much more public figure around the campus than his predecessors had been. During his term the Office of the President relocated from Bellarmine Hall down to Canisius Hall, closer to the students, faculty and classrooms. Through his efforts the by-laws of the charter were amended and the Board of Trustees was created. He employed more laymen in posts of responsibility than ever before, and was also the first President to employ the idea of divided responsibility at the vice presidential level, appointing vice presidents for finance, academic affairs, student services, and others. During his tenure, the Graduate School of Corporate and Political Communication opened in 1970. In 1969, the School of Nursing was established as a school rather than a department, and in 1970 female students, nursing or otherwise, were admitted to Fairfield which was now officially co-ed. The Center for Lifetime Learning offered its first courses and the University graduated its first class of women in 1973.

Rev. William Edmund Fitzgerald, S.J.
A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Father Fitzgerald assumed his duties as Dean of Fairfield in September 1949. He became acting Rector when Fairfield University President Rev. James H. Dolan was appointed Vice–Provincial of the Jesuit New England Province in February 1950. Father Fitzgerald served as acting Rector/President until October 1950, when he himself was appointed Provincial of the New England Province, a post he held until 1956. Father Fitzgerald's entire family seemed destined for the field of education. His younger brother, Rev. James E. Fitzgerald, S.J. was Dean of the College of the Holy Cross while William was at Fairfield. In 1958, James became the 4th President of Fairfield University and served until 1964. Another Brother, Rev. Leo F. Fitzgerald, S.J., was a professor of French at Holy Cross, and there were two Fitzgerald sisters who were also engaged in the educational field: Sister Norberta of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy was a professor of education in St. Joseph’s College in Portland, Maine, and Miss Kathleen Fitzgerald was a teacher in Oliver Perry Junior High School in Providence, Rhode Island.

Silhouette of the inside of Alumni Hall looking northwest toward entrance
Alumni Hall is one of the earliest pre-stressed concrete structures of this kind ever attempted. Engineering magazines from the time noted that the eleven 160-foot pre-cast arches used in the building’s construction were a record-breaking span for pre-cast arch ribs used in the United States.

Approximately twenty-five students participated in this event in 1990, which consisted of a 36-hour vigil. Fifteen of the students slept outside on Palm Sunday night wrapped in blankets donated by other students. The event was designed to promote awareness of the plight of the homeless.
